The Colcom Foundation: Making Changes Now to Preserve our Future

Nowadays, the imbalance between the natural world and humans is as plain as the eye can see. Our planet is suffering from high levels of pollution, loss of biodiversity, and destruction of habitats. We are on the verge of ecosystem collapse.

Believe it or not, unchecked population growth is the catalyst for all these imbalances. The Colcom Foundation understands that our growth-driven culture will be our undoing. Their concern for human quality of life drives their efforts to create a better future for us all.

Cordelia S. May founded the Colcom Foundation in 1996 at the age of 68. From the very beginning of her life, the balance and beauty of nature fascinated this passionate woman. Her fascination led to many joys, but it also revealed the negative consequences of an imbalance in nature. She understood this imbalance, left unchecked, would lead to a deficit in the human quality of life.

The issue is incremental population growth is virtually impossible to detect when looking at things from a daily point of view. Over a period of several years, however, this cumulative growth has devastating consequences. Miss May created her foundation to offer grants for humanitarian purposes and to promote a balanced environment. As such, it focuses on three main funding interests:

Carrying capacity: Unchecked human population growth has a tremendous impact on the environment. Our species will see a decline in quality of life if we don’t do something soon. The Foundation understands this dilemma. Colcom Foundation is a staunch supporter of immigration reform and family planning.

Local environment: The Foundation’s home lies in Southwestern Pennsylvania. They support several conservation and environmental projects to protect and preserve the area and the people that live there. Colcom Foundation’s work has also facilitated proactive environmental advocacy and protection by groups, including the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, WeConservePA, Westmoreland Land Trust, Protect PT, and Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services.

Local community: The Foundation supports projects that improve and enrich the quality of life of locals. These efforts include arts and culture, education, community development, and more.

The human race is at a pivotal juncture in our natural lives. If we don’t make drastic changes soon, our quality of life will decrease drastically. The Colcom Foundation funds humanitarian efforts to ensure this doesn’t happen.
