Justin Nelson of JP Morgan on Building Decades-Long Client Trust

Trust is not something a financial advisor can hand a client on day one. That is the view of Justin Nelson, Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at JP Morgan Private Bank. After close to thirty years in the industry, Nelson says the bond he has with longtime clients cannot be replicated by someone new to the business, no matter how skilled they might be with numbers.

Years, Not Quarters

“A lot of that is about trust, and that’s something that you build up with someone over time,” Nelson explains. Justin Nelson JP Morgan points to the difference between his early career and where he stands now. “If you’re doing something like what I do for the first couple of years, it’s very different than if you’ve been doing it for close to 30 years. Relationships are different when you really get to know people.”

Nelson currently oversees more than fifteen billion dollars in assets from JP Morgan’s Connecticut office, working primarily with families and financial principals who need guidance that spans market cycles rather than single transactions. Some of his client relationships have lasted over twenty years, extending now to the children of the people he originally advised. Each stage of that relationship, he says, requires a slightly different kind of guidance.

Measuring What Numbers Cannot Capture

For Justin Nelson, wealth management remains one of the few corners of finance where personal connection still drives outcomes as much as performance data. He describes helping families navigate complex decisions as deeply fulfilling work, separate from any quarterly target JP Morgan might track. His twenty-person team benefits from that same philosophy, learning to build client relationships the same patient way he has for nearly three decades, one conversation at a time.
