John Hailer, American Executive

Former CEO at Natixis John Hailer Discusses Motivation in the Workplace, Life Lessons, and the Power of Relationships

John Hailer spent his time as the CEO of a bank in France. He moved on from there to become the CEO of Natixis in America. Now he is an American executive with twenty-two years experience, tenures on four continents, and three languages under his belt. We spoke with him about various topics including motivation in the workplace and the power of relationships.

We begin by asking Hailer how he stayed motivated while working at Natixis.

“I believe that each person is his or her own best motivator. A person who is deeply motivated works very hard, in fact it might be a bit unhealthy. Over the years, I have come to realize that people should not try and motivate themselves, but rather they should trust their instincts and do what they feel they must do and deal with the results.”

When asked about how John Hailer got to where he is today, Hailer made it clear that it was nothing special. He shared a story about a conversation with a friend of his whose opinion he highly respects. They were having dinner together and his friend told him, “If you think all the hard work you have done over the years will be rewarded with a beautiful wife, three kids and a nice house, that is not going to happen. You will have all that and more, but you have to believe it is not fair and that you deserve it.”

“It was a strange but kind of a revelation,” said Hailer. “I thought to myself that maybe I had been working hard all this time not because I thought I would get something out of it, but because I did not think that what I would get was fair.
