Michael Polk Leads Implus After Berkshire Partners Return
Retirement did not last long for Michael Polk Newell Brands Less than a year after stepping down as chief executive of Newell Brands, he returned to full-time corporate leadership in early 2020, this time inside the world of private equity rather than public markets.
Polk joined Berkshire Partners as an advisory director and simultaneously took over as chief executive officer of Implus LLC, one of the firm’s portfolio companies. The role gave him a chance to apply the turnaround playbook he had built over eight years at Newell to a smaller, privately owned business facing its own set of operational hurdles.
Building a Double Down Strategy
Polk has described his approach at Implus LLC as a double down strategy, a plan that combines changes to the company’s product portfolio with new ways of working, a refreshed set of core cultural beliefs, and a rebuilt leadership team. The framework echoes the playbook he used at Newell, where portfolio changes and leadership turnover played a central role in the company’s growth from $5.4 billion to $9.4 billion in annual sales.
The timing added an unusual wrinkle. Polk had barely settled into the Implus role when the global pandemic disrupted supply chains and consumer demand across nearly every industry. Implus, like most private companies, does not disclose detailed financial results, but people close to the business have described the turnaround as ahead of early expectations.
Today, Michael Polk continues to serve as both an advisory director for Berkshire Partners and president and chief executive officer of Implus, a dual role that keeps him close to both the investment and operating sides of the business. For an executive who has spent four decades moving between engineering, marketing, and general management, the current chapter looks like a natural extension of a career built on solving one operational puzzle after another.
