JP Morgan Leader Justin Nelson Rethinks the Finance Degree
A finance degree has long been treated as the entry ticket to a banking career. Justin Nelson, who has worked in wealth management for nearly 30 years, questions that assumption. The Managing Director at JP Morgan says he gives little weight to the subject a candidate studied.
Nelson heads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, where his 20-person group oversees more than $15 billion in assets. His views on hiring, shared with Money Inc, push against the conventional idea that only business majors belong in finance.
What Replaces the Credential
Rather than a particular major, Justin Nelson JP Morgan wants applicants with a real interest in finance and the raw talent for the work. He also wants people who are “humble and genuine,” traits that shape how clients experience an advisor over years of meetings.
That emphasis comes from the job itself. JP Morgan private bank clients bring questions about inheritance, transferring wealth across generations, and family relationships. Handling those conversations well requires empathy and judgment more than a memorized formula.
Room for Other Disciplines
Justin Nelson has noticed that psychology majors often stand out among applicants, since he considers about half of the work to be about people. Biology and engineering graduates catch his attention too, because they tend to approach problems differently from classmates who studied finance.
His own academic history supports the argument. He earned degrees in chemistry and economics from Tufts University before finishing an MBA at Columbia University. Moving between subjects helped him learn to connect information from separate fields, a skill he relies on when advising clients.
Students who chose a less common path should take note Justin Nelson, a leader with decades of experience is telling them their background could be an advantage. Technical knowledge can be learned on the job, while curiosity and character are much harder to teach. Refer to this article for related information.
