Yves Mirabaud, Banking Beyond The Pandemic

Yves Mirabaud is a senior managing partner of Mirabaud SCA. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the institute of international studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

Yves Mirabaud is a prolific banker, who started his illustrious career working for various firms in Geneva, Zurich, New York, and Boston before landing at Mirabaud in 1993 and becoming a managing partner in 1996 and senior managing partner in 2012. Yves is the board chairman of Mirabaud and Cie SA and chairman of the board of Yves Mirabaud Abu Dhabi limited.

With his leadership, the bank registered a 15% return on equity in 2020 despite the pandemic. Although this was a sharp drop in profit compared to 2018 and 2019, a period that had seen extraordinary revenue, it is impressive in the circumstance. During this uncertainty, Mirabaud has been using the hedging strategy, which Yves has defended as a good move. He said although it made them seem old-fashioned and conservative, it was not in their culture to be aggressive in the market.

On cutting costs in 2020, he said while there wasn’t any cost-cutting, the bank has been careful with its spending. On the positive, Covid-19 has led to direct savings in other areas such as sponsoring events, travel, and entertainment.

While the bank has no current plans to expand geographically, Yves Mirabaud has stated that they will instead focus on consolidating their business in the Middle East and Latin America. He added a plan to be more active in real estate private equity funds with 1 billion dollars secured funds and planned further transactions in the US.

When asked to comment on matters ESG, he says that banks can be part of the solution and that it’s up to them to steer investors’ money toward new technology which can mitigate the effects of climate change.

The busy banker is also the president of the Geneva financial center foundation and a member of the board of directors of the Geneva chamber of commerce, industry, and services. See this article for additional information.
