She is the eldest of four girls and has two brothers who are also musicians; one, Jerry (born 1938), is a bass player, and the other, David (born 1940), currently plays guitar and keyboards for Phil Lesh and Friends (Phil Lesh & Friends). Margie’s father was an engineer at Bendix Corporation who owned a house by Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. Margie began playing the guitar when she turned nine, teaching herself chords by ear. When Margie was fourteen years old, she started writing her songs.
