Michael Polk’s Leadership at Newell Fueled a Decade of Growth

When Michael Polk took over as president and CEO of Newell Rubbermaid in 2011, the company posted net sales of $5.4 billion. By the time he stepped down in 2019, revenues had reached $9.4 billion an eight-year compound annual growth rate of over 7%. That turnaround has become one of the more closely studied chapters in consumer goods leadership.

Polk came to the role with a background in operational transformation. He had restructured parts of Unilever’s Americas business under what the company called the ‘One Unilever’ model, tightening commercial execution and lifting margins. That experience gave him a playbook he could apply at a larger scale.

Project Renewal and Portfolio Transformation

At Newell, Polk launched Project Renewal, a cost-reduction initiative that generated over $500 million in savings. The program gave the company room to reinvest in marketing and accelerate organic growth. During his tenure, Polk and his team completed 35 transactions, split roughly evenly between acquisitions and divestitures. The goal was to shift Newell from a US-centric holding company into a focused global consumer goods business.

E-commerce became a particular area of emphasis. Michael Polk Newell Brands grew the company’s digital commerce share from 9% to more than 20% of global sales. He also reduced organizational complexity by flattening hierarchies and removing unnecessary layers of management. The company served one billion shoppers by the time he retired.

A Record of Consistency

Michael Polk has noted that Newell met or exceeded its external financial guidance in 30 of the 32 quarters he served as CEO. The dividend grew by 253% during that period. He has described his board relationship as one built on earned trust through each phase of transformation. After leaving Newell in 2019, Polk joined Berkshire Partners as an advisory director and took on the CEO role at portfolio company Implus LLC, where he launched a new phase of operational change.
