Richard Liu Qiangdong is the chief executive officer and founder of JD.com Inc., based in China and the world’s largest online electronics retailer. Richard Liu was born in Chang’an District in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China. His birth name is Liu Qiangdong, but he was forced to change his name to work in the United States. Liu Qiangdong is a well-known figure in the technology world today; he is currently one of the major players behind JD.com Inc., a Chinese e-commerce company that serves as an internet giant. At an early age, Liu confessed to an intense fascination with technology. He was introduced to computers and technology by his father. His father would bring home the latest model of computer, which he would show to Richard and his friends. At age 9, Liu started experimenting with technology by making his computer programs at home. When he was 11 years old, Liu’s parents bought him his first computer: a PC-XT manufactured by Compaq Computer.

Richard pursued his passion for technology by attending Peking University in Beijing, China. At this university, Richard Liu graduated with a bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He later attended graduate school and earned an advanced degree from the Beijing Institute of Technology. He graduated with a Masters’s Degree in Systems Engineering in 1999. He gained this degree under the advisement of Professor Peng Zongchao. In his years at the Beijing Institute of Technology, Richard Liu had several jobs, including part-time tutor, teaching assistant, instructor, and system administrator.

Richard Liu also interned at Planet Computers, which allowed him to have experience on the software side of things. When he was 16, Richard Liu left school to join Planet Computers as an intern. His work experience at this Chinese tech company helped shape his future career path.
